Almost every automaker in the US has decided to put the Tesla Supercharger port (or NACS — North American Charging Standard — port) on its EVs in the future, instead of CCS fast charging ports. The challenge, in the meantime, is getting adapters for existing EVs to allow them to use Tesla Superchargers. That’s important since Superchargers are more reliable and very nicely spread out across the United States and Canada for long-distance or regional travel.

Among the companies now offering Tesla Supercharging adapters, some are providing the adapters free of charge and others are charging their customers for them. Hyundai has gone what I think is the smarter route, since it brings a lot of goodwill and a brand boost. It is now offering NACS adapters free of charge.

This is in addition to the fact that 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5s are now being delivered with the NACS port included. And Hyundai will provide adapters for those EVs as well — CCS adapters. Interestingly, for now, the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 will charge faster with the CCS adapter than with the native Supercharger port! It will charge from 10–80% in just 20 minutes with the CCS adapter and will charge from 10–80% in 30 minutes via the native port at a Supercharger. That’s because Tesla Superchargers can’t yet make the most use of the 800-volt E-GMP platform the IONIQ 5 comes with. Similarly, the IONIQ 9 coming out later in 2025 will be able to charge from 10–80% in 24 minutes at a CCS charging station and will be able to charge from 10–80% in 38 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger.

Anyway, back to the situation for current Hyundai EVs, here are more details from Hyundai on the complementary Supercharger adapters for Hyundai EVs that don’t have the native NACS port: “Starting in the first quarter of 2025, current and new Hyundai EV owners who have purchased or leased their vehicle on or before January 31, 2025 will be able to request a free NACS adapter (shipping included) through the MyHyundai owner portal. This Hyundai-authorized adapter will give CCS-port-equipped Hyundai EV drivers access to more than 20,000 Tesla Superchargers[ii] in the United States. Free adapters will be available to eligible owners of the following models:

Hyundai is saying that it’s doing this to accelerate the EV revolution. Who knows if that’s actually true or it’s the more likely case that Hyundai wants good press? Either way, though, it does help EV adoption and provides a better EV experience to Hyundai EV owners, which should help the company sell more EVs/cars.

“To accelerate EV adoption, we started by listening to our current owners,” said Olabisi Boyle, senior vice president, product planning and mobility strategy, Hyundai Motor North America. “These adapters will make DC fast-charging more convenient for current owners. Plus, the NACS port on new models like the upcoming IONIQ 9, along with improvements to our digital charging ecosystem, will further enhance the customer experience for future EV drivers. Our goal is to make the transition to electric seamless.”

If Hyundai had made these decisions years ago, and before Ford did, it would be easier to believe all of that. However, we don’t really need to believe it. We can just be happy with the decision and look forward to Hyundai EV owners enjoying the EV life more and having more options for convenient, reliable fast charging.

More details will be provided in coming days. To be specific, this is what Hyundai writes about that: “Details, instructions, and terms and conditions related to the process for owners to claim their complimentary adapter along with pricing for adapter units will be released in 2025 via HyundaiNews.com and additional customer-facing communication channels.”

Oh, and there’s one more good news item! Genesis, Hyundai’s more luxurious and lower-volume brand, will also get access to the Tesla Supercharging network. Details regarding that will be provided in early 2025 as well.
