ZHENJIANG, China–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#PowerSupply–On the evening of October 27, 2024, a brand-new Chinese-made 500kV transformer was successfully transported into the 500kV Shangdang Substation in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, marking a new phase in the capacity expansion and replacement project for the main transformer at this critical substation hub in the region. Upon completion, this project will further improve grid infrastructure and better support the electricity demands driven by regional economic growth.
Earlier on August 3 this year, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration (NEA) issued the “Large-Scale Equipment Upgrade Plan for Key Energy Fields,” calling for equipment upgrades and technological retrofits in power transmission and distribution to support the construction of a new energy system. As an important hub substation for transmitting electricity from the north to the south and from the west to the east in China, the 500kV Shangdang Substation is the first 500kV substation in Zhenjiang. The substation has a total of four main transformers, among which the No. 1 main transformer with a power supply capacity of 750 MVA has been in operation for 29 years. The equipment is severely aged and in poor operating condition. Moreover, most of its related accessories are imported products with long replacement cycles, posing great difficulties for routine maintenance.
In order to actively respond to the requirements of the NDRC and further improve the infrastructure of important hub substations in the region, State Grid Zhenjiang Power Supply Company is carrying out this main transformer capacity expansion project in the sequence of “demolishing the old before installing the new,” implementing it in stages according to the power outage plan. The original 750 MVA No. 1 main transformer will be replaced with a 1000 MVA Chinese-made device. Currently, the dismantling work of the No. 1 main transformer and its related switches, protections, and cables has been completed, and the entire capacity expansion and replacement project will be fully completed and put into operation by December this year.
