Sibanye-Stillwater has added a fourth renewable power feather to its cap with an additional 140-megawatt (MW) wind energy project in South Africa.
The major reached financial close on the Umsinde Emoyeni wind farm this week, with construction expected to commence in the near future.
Commercial production is scheduled to begin in late 2026, where the farm will supply Sibanye-Stillwater’s South African operations.
“Financial close of the Umsinde Emoyeni wind farm marks another critical step in our journey to carbon neutrality by 2040,” Sibanye-Stillwater chief executive officer Neal Froneman said.
“The renewable energy secured through our four power purchase agreements (PPAs) will enable a stepped reduction in our carbon footprint, aiming to contribute not only to mitigate the effects of climate change, but also enhancing the sustainability and shared value creation of our SA operations through favourable pricing relative to current supply.
“We continue to develop and execute energy solutions that contribute to the delivery of our strategy.”
Under the terms of a 20-year PPA with Sibanye-Stillwater, the project will be fully funded by a project consortium which will build, own and operate the project.
The project brings Sibanye-Stillwater’s renewable energy capacity to 407MW, marking the company as a market leader in private energy procurement in South Africa.
Together, the projects secure 70 per cent of Sibanye-Stillwater’s long-term energy requirements in South Africa.
