Sibanye-Stillwater has awarded nine bursaries to top performing students near its operations in South Africa.
The bursaries will support the students from Merafong, Rand West, Rustenburg, Marikana and Brakpan as they prepare to pursue tertiary studies.
The students have been recognised for their commitment to education in the face of challenging socioeconomic conditions.
Since the program began in 2019, 56 top performers have been awarded bursaries. Four of those students graduated in 2023 and are currently participating in internships.
These bursaries are in addition to Sibanye-Stillwater’s annual bursary scheme for mining-related studies.
For the past ten years, Sibanye-Stillwater has granted 1558 bursaries for studies at tertiary institutions in South Africa.
“Education is central to our endeavour to drive a long-lasting and positive impact in our communities and our contribution facilitates access and contributes to skills development,” Sibanye-Stillwater chief executive officer Neal Froneman said.
“Congratulations to the top achievers for their outstanding academic results and we look forward to their contribution and witnessing the difference they will make in their communities.”
Sibanye-Stillwater also launched a mathematics and science education program in 17 schools within the Madibeng and Rustenburg local municipalities close to its South African platinum group metal operations.
In its three years running the program has aimed to support over 17,000 learners a to pursue education and improve their outcomes.
