This innovative approach not only provides homeowners with backup power during outages but also contributes to grid stability through virtual power plants (VPPs).
Base Power’s Affordable Backup Solution
Austin-based startup Base Power has introduced a model where homeowners can access substantial home battery systems for a minimal setup fee of $495, accompanied by a $195 annual membership. This approach eliminates the traditional barrier of high upfront costs, which can range from $10,000 to $20,000 for similar systems. By becoming the homeowner’s electricity provider, Base Power retains ownership of the battery systems, allowing them to manage and monetize the stored energy. This strategy enables the company to offer these systems at a fraction of the typical cost.
Each Base Power battery system boasts a capacity of 25 kilowatt-hours, sufficient to power a typical home for approximately 30 hours during an outage. When the grid is operational, these batteries participate in grid-balancing activities, charging during periods of low demand and discharging when demand peaks. This not only supports grid stability but also generates revenue for Base Power, which is then passed on to customers through competitive electricity rates.
Integration With Solar
For homeowners with existing solar panels, Base Power’s system offers seamless integration. The battery stores excess solar energy produced during the day, which can then be used during peak hours or outages, maximizing the value of the solar installation. Additionally, Base Power provides a competitive buyback program, crediting customers for surplus energy at real-time wholesale rates plus an additional 3 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Enhancing Grid Resilience Through Virtual Power Plants
The concept of VPPs involves aggregating distributed energy resources, such as home batteries, to function collectively as a single power plant. This aggregation can supply electricity to the grid during peak demand or emergencies, enhancing overall grid resilience. In Texas, where the power grid has faced significant challenges due to extreme weather events, VPPs offer a promising solution. By pooling residential batteries, companies like Base Power can provide substantial support to the grid, potentially preventing blackouts and reducing reliance on traditional power plants.
Customer Experiences & Expansion Plans
Homeowners who have adopted Base Power’s system report increased peace of mind and satisfaction. For instance, Michael Pelletier, a retiree in the Copperfield area, highlighted the affordability and reliability of the system, especially after experiencing a week-long outage due to a severe storm.
Since its launch in May 2024, Base Power has installed nearly 1,000 battery systems in the Austin and Dallas areas and has recently expanded to the Houston region. The company aims to address the growing demand for reliable home energy solutions in Texas, a state that has experienced numerous weather-related power outages over the past two decades.
