New initiative encourages new thinking around exploration

Think & Act Differently, powered by BHP, and Unearthed have launched the Open House Orebody Knowledge Challenge, the latest global initiative designed to enhance decision-making associated with exploration.

The Orebody Knowledge Challenge invites innovators from a range of industries to present concepts and solutions designed to improve sub surface data collection.

The challenge focuses on innovation in three key areas: faster data collection, improved characterisation between drill holes, and enhanced data integration and unification.

Innovators from inside and outside the mining industry are invited to present technologies designed to increase drilling rates or reduce the need for drilling while maintaining accuracy, enhance orebody data resolution, enable better sample analysis or improve in-situ measurement precision, and collect high-density data and unify multiple sources.

Think & Act Differently will provide select innovators with tailored support. This includes:

  • funding for physical or digital experiments to de-risk solutions
  • access to resources, including mining experts, sample data, and operational insights
  • network connections to BHP ventures, industry partners, and funding ecosystems
  • technical support to design and execute solution testing with guided feedback
  • mentorship from industry and commercial experts to refine market entry strategies.

“We recognise that new ideas come from thinking in different ways, so through this challenge we are looking to collaborate with people from both outside and inside the mining industry,” Unearthed said.

“We are looking to support people that can deliver value to our operations today, and those looking to derisk novel technologies that can support expansions and new operations in the future.

“We recognise that innovation isn’t a one-size fits all process and tailor each innovator’s journey to their strengths and aspirations.”

The Orebody Knowledge Challenge will conclude on May 6, with the selected innovators to be announced on June 9.
