Lynk & Co is opening up a whole new market in Europe. The company is bringing the 08, a plugin hybrid with 200 kilometers (124 miles) of all-electric range and DC fast charging capability to European markets. To clarify, that is well beyond the electric range of any other plugin hybrids in Europe, making it much easier to drive on electricity the vast majority of the time while still offering the backup of a gas engine in case you’re ever driving in areas with very limited or nonexistent charging infrastructure.
I know a lot of people don’t like any type of hybrid, seeing the fossil-powered portion of the powertrain as problematic in several ways. I get it. And the bigger issue is when plugin hybrids get big incentives that get people to buy them with no intention or plans for using the electric portion of the powertrain, which has been a problem in some European markets. However, I do believe plugin hybrids can serve a role for certain people and situations, and I much prefer plugin hybrids that heavily emphasize the electric side of the equation and make it easier to drive on electricity almost 100% of the time.
Just thinking about plugin hybrids for their potential as stepping-stone cars for people who are too nervous to go fully electric, a plugin hybrid like this should get such people to see how easy it can be driving on electricity and that they don’t need 600 miles of range or 5-minute charging. For people who aren’t living very niche lifestyles, I imagine the Lynk & Co 08 will serve the role of transition vehicle perfectly and be a gateway to 100% electric driving.
“The 08 is a true game-changer, offering the longest all-electric range in its segment, minimizing the need for frequent recharges and reducing carbon footprints. With a total range exceeding 1,100km and DC fast charging that takes the battery from 10% to 80% in just 33 minutes, it’s designed for those who value freedom, convenience, and performance,” Lynk & Co writes.
The 08 hits European shores in June 2025. Pricing starts at €52,995. “Starting February 26, 2025, customers can register their interest to receive the latest updates. To be among the first to experience the 08 and schedule a test drive, simply sign up on your local Lynk & Co website.”
There’s a lot of flowery language around the 08, but not many details on that website. However, what more is there to know? If the design of the vehicle and the unique powertrain floats your boat, the next step should be lining up a test drive to see how the car feels, how much you like the interior and infotainment, and whether it’s the car for you. (Personally, I think the vehicle looks very sharp, and the interior looks wicked nice. Too bad it’s not coming to the US anytime soon … or ever.)
Just from the perspective of watching the market and tracking market trends, what sets this model apart is clearly its unprecedented (for Europe) powertrain and charging capabilities. I’m fascinated to see how the model does, but I think it’s going to be a big hit in several European markets. We will see.
