Q: How would you describe the state of tech in carbon supply chain management, and where it’s heading?

Moritz Nill: Supply chain emissions have become a major priority for companies — driven largely by regulation. While most large companies have started measuring their emissions, very few go beyond that to actively reduce them. Many get stuck in ‘analysis paralysis’, continuously searching for better data instead of taking action. However, we already know what works: transitioning to green energy and implementing energy efficiency measures — both of which can come at a negative cost. The next step is making these actions scalable, and technology plays a crucial role in that.

Q: How does your company CTRL+S fit into this?

Moritz Nill: Our solution CTRL+S provides procurement departments with a scalable way to both measure and reduce supply chain emissions. Beyond carbon footprint calculations, our platform enables direct supplier engagement at scale, making emissions reductions practical for tens of thousands of suppliers. In short, we turn supply chain decarbonization into a measurable, actionable process.

Q: What was it that first made you interested in carbon supply chain management, and when?

Moritz Nill: While working as a consultant and emissions auditor at PwC, I realized that companies often know surprisingly little about their supply chains beyond what they buy and from whom. But supply chains account for around 80% of corporate carbon emissions — making carbon neutrality impossible without addressing them. Yet, companies often focus on the wrong things. This inspired me to find a new way to give businesses deeper visibility into their supply chain emissions and provide them with effective tools to drive real reductions.

Q: What are you currently working on in terms of simplifying supply chain emission management, and how can readers best understand the service your company provides?

Moritz Nill: Supply chain carbon management involves two key steps: measuring emissions and reducing them. At ctrl+s, we simplify both.

First, our item+s tool enables companies to quickly assess their supply chain carbon footprint using spend-based data, simulating emissions with statistical modeling. This provides a comprehensive overview without requiring extensive supplier data upfront.

Next, our supplier+s tool helps companies engage their suppliers to drive real emissions reductions. It provides structured supplier surveys, guidance on reduction measures, and tracks emissions progress over time. Businesses can also use it to integrate sustainability criteria into supplier selection.  With over 10,000 suppliers on the platform – and counting – we help companies move from analysis to action.

Q: Where do you hope, and where do you think, the carbon industry, and specifically supply chain emission management is in 3 years?

Moritz Nill: I hope that large multinational companies will stay committed to reducing emissions in their supply chains – especially in a time when some governments are stepping back from climate commitments. I believe the industry will move past ‘analysis paralysis’ and start taking concrete action. Our scalable IT solutions will help companies do this at little or no cost – ensuring that climate action remains both practical and profitable.

Q: What differences do you see nationally and globally in the understanding and implementation of carbon supply chain emissions?

Moritz Nill: There are stark differences in supply chain management worldwide. Europe is leading, largely due to regulation. The US is still lagging behind, while Asia — especially China — is showing strong commitment, which is encouraging. Through our platform, which now includes over 10,000 companies, we can see these regional trends play out in real time.

Q: What’s a pioneer or person you look up to?

Moritz Nill: Apple’s approach to intuitive design is something I deeply admire. Their products feel effortless to use, yet behind the scenes, immense complexity is handled seamlessly. That’s exactly what we aim for with our solutions — making supply chain carbon management as simple as possible while mastering the complexity in the background.

Q: If you had one wish, what policy to enact around climate, what would it be?

Moritz Nill: I would ensure that corporate decarbonization regulations such as CSRD and CSDDD – continue to enforce emissions reductions, especially in Scope 3. And if one may wish for an even bolder approach, how about implementing a global unified carbon pricing scheme that fully reflects the real-life mitigation and adaptation costs of climate change?
