The Hyundai IONIQ 5 started out a bit quietly when it hit the US market. I wasn’t particularly sold on it, liking the Kia EV6 a bit more. However, it has grown and grown on me, and would now be my #1 choice for a new electric car if I was ready to buy one. I’ve heard similar things from several others, and some of our top commenters have gotten one.

So, it was not super surprising to see that the IONIQ 5’s sales have jumped a lot in recent months. However, to see that sales surged 110% in November compared to November 2023 did make my eyes bulge.

The IONIQ 5 rose from 2,372 sales in November 2023 to 4,989 sales in November 2024. The bad news is the IONIQ 6 saw its sales decline slightly, by 19% from 1,386 sales in November 2023 to 1,121 sales in November 2024. That is strongly offset by the IONIQ 5’s growth, though, so it’s still a strong net positive. And the IONIQ 5 total was a new record for the model.

Looking across the first 11 months of the year, IONIQ 5 sales were up 30%, from 30,657 sales in 2023 to 39,805 sales in 2024. Meanwhile, IONIQ 6 sales were up by a slight 1%, from 10,943 in 2023 to 11,055 in 2024.

“Hybrid vehicle total sales jumped 114%, while total EV sales grew 70%. This was the best-ever month for Santa Fe HEV, Tucson PHEV, Tucson HEV and IONIQ 5,” Hyundai notes. “Retail sales for November 2024 set new records climbing 15%. EV retail sales increased 77% year-over-year, hybrid retail sales grew by 104% and electrified (EV, hybrid, plug-in hybrid) retail sales jumped 92%.”

Clearly, Hyundai is appreciative of its EV sales business and proud of its growth. It looks like EV sales aren’t dropping for yet another major auto brand after all. Who knew?

“Hyundai delivered an exceptional sales month, driven by the strong performance of our EV and hybrid vehicles,” said Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “Customers continue to be attracted to Hyundai’s diverse vehicle lineup which can meet a variety of customer needs. We also saw significant interest and excitement for the worldwide debut of the U.S.-built IONIQ 9 and we can’t wait to bring it to market next year.” Yes, the IONIQ 9 should jack up the brand’s EV sales yet again.

Overall, Hyundai spent most of its monthly press release about auto sales writing about its electric and hybrid models. That’s a great sign not just for today or last month, but also for coming months and years. Hyundai seems focused on going into the future with compelling mass-market electric vehicles and letting EVs take the center stage now. The company is still far away from the majority of its sales being electric. But at least it’s moving in the right direction and still seeing rapid growth in its EV business.
