With all the exaggerated reactions in the news media to the United States beginning a new phase of executive government leadership, some of the good sustainability news might be getting lost in the melee. The human part of the world has 195 nations, and they are not all pulling out of the Paris Agreement and the World Health organization. The Europeans seem to be ahead, or far ahead of most Americans, when it comes to climate change awareness. The European Union has made progress in improving its energy independence, for example.
At the consumer level, Enphase recently announced a new residential energy storage product, the IQ® Battery 5P with FlexPhase, for Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
Andy Newbold, Senior Director, Corporate Communications at Enphase Energy, answered some questions about the battery system for CleanTechnica.
The IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase is now available in Germany, Austria, & Switzerland. What is the battery capacity and chemistry?
Each battery has a capacity of 5 kWh and can be configured up to 70 kWh. Each 5 kWh battery delivers 3.84 kW power in single-phase configuration and 1.28 kW per phase in three-phase configuration. The battery chemistry is lithium iron phosphate (LFP).
What can it be used for? Is it for residences only, or can businesses also use it?
The IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase is designed for residential use, offering versatility to meet a wide range of home energy needs across Europe. It supports both single-phase and three-phase applications, ensuring compatibility with diverse residential setups.
What is the cost, expected lifespan, and warranty?
The cost varies distributor to distributor, installer to installer.
The IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase comes with an industry-leading 15-year warranty in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Its lifespan depends on a variety of factors, including number of cycles, care, etc.
Are there any incentives in the three countries for buyers, such as rebates or tax credits?
There are a variety of incentives for home solar and battery systems in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. We don’t have a comprehensive list, and it can vary based on utility, municipality, etc.
Additionally, Enphase’s IQ Energy Management, a new artificial intelligence (AI) based energy management software, enables support for dynamic electricity rates. This can help maximize the return on investment for homeowners with IQ Battery 5Ps.
Can the IQ Battery 5P be combined with several others of the same kind to create a larger energy storage system?
Yes, the IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase is designed to grow with homeowners’ energy needs. Additional batteries can be added over time, allowing homeowners to expand their home energy storage solution as needed (up to 70 kWh).
What is the installation process, and does it require an electrician?
Yes, installation requires a licensed electrician due to the electrical work and safety standards involved. However, installation is simple; the IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase comes with a quick install guide that can aid the installer in installing and commissioning the system, no matter if it is a single-phase or three-phase application.
What is the battery’s form factor: weight, height, width?
Lifting weight: 69.5 kg or 153.2 lb
Total installed weight: 83 kg or 182.9 lb
Height: 980 mm or 38.6 in
Width: 550 mm or 21.4 in
Can the battery system be paired with rooftop solar power or a small wind power turbine?
Yes, the IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase is fully compatible with a home solar system, offering seamless integration with other Enphase energy products. Designed to work harmoniously as part of the Enphase Energy System, it provides a flexible solution tailored to meet homeowners’ evolving energy needs. Homeowners can start with a single IQ Battery 5P and easily expand their system over time as their requirements grow.
