London, January 31, 2025 (Oilandgaspress) –- Oil prices rose on Friday as markets weighed continued threat of tariffs by US President Donald Trump on Mexico and Canada. Brent crude futures for March, which expires on Friday, gained 38 cents at $77.25 a barrel.
US West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) gained 49 cents to $73.22.
Baker Hughes Rig Count: U.S. +6 to 582 Canada +13 to 258
U.S. Rig Count is up 6 from last week to 582 with oil rigs up 7 to 479, gas rigs down 1 to 98 and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 5.
Canada Rig Count is up 13 from last week to 258, with oil rigs up 12 to 186, gas rigs up 1 to 72 and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0.
International Rig Count is down 10 rigs from last month to 909 with land rigs unchanged at 712, offshore rigs down 10 to 197. International Rig Count is down 46 rigs from last year’s count of 955, with land rigs down 23, offshore rigs down 13.

Ukrainian drones struck the Nizhny Novgorod oil refinery in Kstovo, in central Russia 520 miles from the front line in northern Ukraine. The blasts triggered what the Ukrainian general staff in Kyiv described as a “powerful” fire that burned through the early morning.Ukraine’s campaign of deep strikes targeting Russian oil facilities has been going on for around two years, but this month’s raids marked a significant escalation. The Kstovo plant alone refined 13,000,000 million barrels of oil a year, roughly 5% of Russia’s total refinery output. A Norwegian ship with an all-Russian crew has been seized by police in Norway on suspicion of being involved in damage to an underwater telecoms cable in the Baltic Sea. The Silver Dania was stopped on Thursday evening and brought into the port of Tromsø in northern Norway on Friday by a Norwegian coast guard vessel, local police said. This action followed a request from Latvian authorities and a ruling by a Norwegian court.
