London, 27 November, 2023, (Oilandgaspress): – A new report from Greenpeace East Asia outlines risks in the accreditation and sale of carbon offset credits as China emerges as a major marketplace for the sale of credits themselves and for related products like “carbon neutral liquid natural gas” (LNG) among oil and gas companies, including Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, PetroChina, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
Oil and gas companies’ increased marketing of carbon offsets comes at a time when these companies are either walking back previous climate commitments or remain wholly uncommitted to take action on climate. Shell, BP, and TotalEnergies have all recently reneged on previous climate commitments. PetroChina and Sinopec, meanwhile, have not made any short-, medium-, or long-term climate commitments in line with the Paris Agreement, despite Beijing’s dual carbon commitments.
The world’s biggest carbon credit issuer Verra faced several major scandals just this year, including with Shell in China. Meanwhile, Shell has abandoned its $100 million-a-year plan to develop carbon offsets.

Smart maintenance using artificial intelligence
Predictive maintenance at BMW Group Plant Regensburg
Preventing unplanned stoppages before they can occur is the aim of the smart analysis system being used in assembly at BMW Group Plant Regensburg. Predictive maintenance is proactive and preventive – and this is precisely what the smart monitoring system offers. Data-driven analyses of conveying equipment allows potential faults to be identified early and avoided – thereby maintaining optimal vehicle production flow. The artificial intelligence (AI)-supported system avoids an average of around 500 minutes of disruption per year in vehicle assembly at the Regensburg plant alone.
Data analysis for faster, preventive response to potential disruptions
For assembly at BMW Group Plant Regensburg, vehicles are generally attached to mobile load carriers or skid systems, which pass through the production halls in a chain. Any technical fault in the state-of-the-art conveyor systems can bring assembly lines to a standstill – requiring more maintenance effort and thus resulting in higher costs. To prevent this from happening, the innovation team at BMW Group Plant Regensburg has developed a system that can identify potential technical defects early – and thus avoid any lost production. The conveyor elements affected can be removed from the assembly line and repaired, away from production. The advantage is that the monitoring system does not require any additional sensors or hardware, but evaluates existing data from installed components and conveyor element control. An alarm sounds if anomalies are found. Read full article

Vegan Interior Trims from Opel
Emotional, electric, efficient, sustainable – these are key characteristics of Opel’s approach to individual mobility of the future. The German carmaker already offers 15 electrified models. Next year, the brand with the Blitz will offer at least one electrified variant of each carline. And from 2025, all newly launched Opel models will be available purely as battery-electric vehicles. The push towards electromobility is one cornerstone of Opel’s ambition of providing sustainable mobility – another is increasing its vegan offer to include vehicles from all segments.
Vegans have more to choose from than just the food they eat or the clothes they wear. They can also choose to drive “vegan” vehicles from Opel, whose product portfolio is full of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles with interior trims that are made of vegan materials. In addition to being free of animal products, the synthetic leathers and vegan materials also meet the same high standards for appearance and haptic quality as conventional trims. All the interior trims offered in various current Opel battery-electric vehicles are exclusively vegan. These include the new Opel Corsa Electric, which recently celebrated its dealership debut, the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric, which made its world premiere at the IAA Mobility in Munich in September, the Opel Astra Electric and the Opel Rocks Electric quadricycle.
