It’s time to announce the winners of 2024 CleanTechnica Car of the Year voting. After coming up with five finalists for the 2024 CleanTechnica Car of the Year in the USA, we opened up voting to readers to choose the winner. Here are the results:

1. Chevrolet Equinox EV — 45%
2. Tesla Cybertruck — 24%
3. Kia EV9 — 19%
4. Honda Prologue — 7%
5. Chevrolet Silverado EV — 5%

So, the clear winner is the Chevrolet Equinox EV. It had a higher percentage of votes than the #2 Tesla Cybertruck and #3 Kia EV9 combined (43%). Congratulations to Chevrolet!

As I noted in the announcement of the finalists, the Chevy Equinox EV is a “great value for money” offering. It’s all about offering enough of the modern goodies at a low enough price to pull in a lot of buyers, achieve mass-market sales, bring down costs further, bring in more buyers, raise volumes, etc. The Equinox EV is already moving about 10,000 units a quarter and only a handful of EVs are selling more in the US.

CleanTechnica‘s Paul Fosse got to explore — including drive and be driven in — a Chevy Equinox EV at a special presentation in Michigan in May 2024. The title of his takeaway article on that experience was, “Is The Chevy Equinox The Affordable EV We’ve Been Waiting For?” His conclusion midway was, “I think Chevy has a winner on its hands with the Equinox EV 1LT, which has an amazing value. Reviews of the Equinox EV have consistently been very positive, with the Equinox EV seen as something like a “normal vehicle,” but one with the powertrain and upgrades you’d want from a modern vehicle. Furthermore, it’s already selling pretty well. It was the 7th best selling electric vehicle in country in the 3rd quarter, only trailing three Tesla models (Model Y, Model 3, and Cybertruck), the Ford Mustang-E, the Honda Prologue, and the Hyundai IONIQ 5. It should sell many more vehicles in the months and years to come, and I think will move up that sales rankings.

That’s right — 319 miles of range for just $33,600! As the company is eager to point out, it compares very favorably against the competition in that regard:

Also, as you can see in that graphic, the SUV has a 17.7-inch touchscreen, a larger screen than the Tesla Model Y, VW ID.4, Hyundai IONIQ 5, or Nissan ARIYA — as well as providing an 11-inch diagonal driver information touchscreen. The Equinox EV comes with 57.2 cu. ft. max cargo volume, and it includes more than 15 standard safety and driver assist features.

Is the Chevy Equinox EV the “best value for money” SUV on the US market today? The Tesla Model Y may want to argue that case, but the fact that the Equinox EV can be in the debate is enough to say it’s a worthy award winner in its debut year.
