- Ampion is supporting UGE’s portfolio in the greater New York City area, consisting of four rooftop community solar projects.
- Approximately half of the electricity generation will be reserved for low-to-moderate-income residents, who will receive a 10-15% discount on their monthly utility bills.
- Collectively, these sites will produce 3.37 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year, equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 15 acres of U.S. forest.
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Community solar access is expanding in the greater New York City area with the addition of four new sites that will serve residents and businesses while helping underserved communities save money on electricity. Ampion, a community solar subscription and revenue management company, is partnering with UGE, a developer that owns and operates community and commercial solar and battery storage projects, to bring these clean energy projects to the greater New York City area.
“For the vast majority of New York City residents and businesses, installing solar panels is not an option,” said Nate Owen, Ampion’s CEO. “These sites address this issue of access while bringing meaningful cost savings. We’re proud to partner with UGE to offer a clean energy solution and electric bill savings to those who need them most. Our commitment to sustainability and equity drives us to expand solar access and make a positive impact in the communities we serve.”
UGE owns and operates the sites and acquired the commercial subscribers, while Ampion completed the residential subscriber acquisition and will handle ongoing subscription management. The 2.76 megawatt (MW) portfolio of rooftop solar projects includes the Spare Cube site in Peekskill, New York, the Feldco site in Staten Island, the Conduit Ave site, and a 1.3 MW project on a high-profile development in Queens. About half of the sites’ electricity production will benefit commercial subscribers, while the other half is reserved for low-to-moderate income (LMI) subscribers. Subscribers on these sites will receive a 10 to 15 percent discount on their bill credits.
“UGE is dedicated to empowering communities with clean and sustainable energy solutions. Our collaboration with Ampion to expand rooftop community solar in New York City underscores our commitment to creating a greener, more equitable future,” said Nick Blitterswyk, CEO at UGE. “These projects not only generate clean energy but also provide tangible financial benefits to underserved communities. We’re proud to be part of this initiative and look forward to further advancing the transition to renewable energy in the region.”
ConEdison customers who enroll in community solar are assigned to a solar farm and are allotted a share of clean energy based on their electricity usage. The amount of energy produced by their share of the solar farm appears on their ConEdison bill as credits, which replace their current charges on their ConEdison bill. The subscriber receives a discount on these credits compared to the standard offer rate.
By participating in New York’s community solar program, residential and corporate subscribers contribute to the state’s transition to clean energy sources. With over a gigawatt worth of community solar projects installed as of March 2022, New York is a national leader in community solar. These projects contribute to the state’s goal of installing 10 gigawatts of solar energy by 2030.
