Tom Kuhn joins Energy Impact Partner as Senior Advisor

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Energy Impact Partners (“EIP”), a global investment firm custom-built to invest in the energy transition, proudly welcomes utility industry veteran Tom Kuhn as a senior advisor. In his role, Mr. Kuhn will provide senior business and strategic counsel to EIP’s 70+ strategic partners, 100+ portfolio companies and prospects to accelerate the pace of clean-energy innovation.

Throughout his notable career, Mr. Kuhn, former long-term President of Edison Electric Institute (“EEI”), played a pivotal role in advancing industry safety, leading clean energy transition efforts and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion across the industry. Under his leadership, EEI’s member corporations, the association that represents all US investor-owned electric companies, agreed to cut emissions 80% by 2050, as compared to 2005, while retaining high reliability and lowering costs. Mr. Kuhn also spearheaded EEI’s mutual assistance efforts designed to restore utilities quickly and safely in the event of a natural disaster such as a tornado, wildfire or hurricane. His influence also extended to policy initiatives, including the United States’ efforts to rejoin the Paris Accords and the passage of the bipartisan infrastructure legislation and the clean energy tax credits of the Inflation Reduction Act.

“The energy transition is a fascinating but complex undertaking that requires bringing industry, innovators and capital together to achieve it in an affordable and reliable manner,” said Hans Kobler, Founder and Managing Partner of EIP. “Tom’s extensive experience and network working with policymakers, corporations and innovators will add tremendous value to EIP advancing our mission. We are excited and humbled to see him join our team.”

EIP’s Chief Utility Officer Kevin Fitzgerald, added, “Tom has led the industry through wholesale and retail deregulation. His knowledge and experience of the key strategic issues for the incumbents and innovators will only increase the power of our platform and allow EIP to bring the founders of our portfolio to market much more quickly.”

Prior to EEI, Mr. Kuhn served as president of the American Nuclear Energy Council, Head of Energy at Alex Brown and Sons and White House Liaison Officer to the Secretary of the Navy. Mr. Kuhn has served on the Electricity Subsector Coordinating Council, the Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board, the Alliance to Save Energy Board and the United States Energy Association Board. A proud Navy veteran, he also serves on the board of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation.

Mr. Kuhn commented, “I’ve known Hans and EIP for 9 years. They were and continue to be a great partner to EEI and the electricity industry through their strategic investments in new technologies that aim to accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions and improve the efficiency of the grid, among many other things. Reaching net zero is an ambitious goal, and I look forward to collaborating with EIP, their portfolio companies and investors as they work to develop solutions.”

Mr. Kuhn joins other recently appointed senior advisors to EIP including Tim Naughton, Chairman (and former CEO) of AvalonBay Communities, and Ed Walter, Former Global CEO of Urban Land Institute.
