More than 25% of Americans Would Consider Selling Their Home to Buy a Tesla Home – CleanTechnica

I’m writing one more article about the results of a survey conducted by JW Surety Bonds. I already wrote about the finding that 1 in 4 Americans won’t touch Tesla products due to Elon Musk, as well as findings related to Tesla robotaxis, and robotaxis more broadly. But there’s an outside-the-box topic they also asked about, and the findings are pretty interesting.

Also, this covers something I said many years ago — Tesla could make an absolute killing by becoming a housing developer and creating “Tesla communities” where people could buy homes packed with Tesla tech. I actually wrote an April Fools’ Day article about this in 2021, and it was very popular. Long before that, I talked with a billionaire sustainable community developer in the UAE about this and he was also of the strong opinion that a tesla community would be hugely successful — and had been pushing for it.

Anyway, getting to the new research, they found that, “More than a quarter of Americans said they would consider selling their home to buy a Tesla Home. Gen Z emerged as the most enthusiastic generation, with nearly 60% expressing interest in owning a Tesla Home. Their enthusiasm extended to their budgets, as Gen Z respondents were willing to spend an average of $1,600 per month for these futuristic dwellings — the highest amount among all age groups.”

Let me repeat: more than 25% of Americans said they’d consider whether to sell their home to buy a Tesla home!

This gets at a bigger issue, I think. Despite a quarter of Americans despising Elon Musk and not touching Tesla products as a result, another quarter of Americans love Tesla and Tesla products so much that they’d sell their home to buy a Tesla home (of course, assuming the price is right). That is a deep commitment to and love for the brand.

As I’ve always said, just saying it’s in a “Tesla community,” there are enough Tesla superfans out there that you could charge a hefty premium on such a property. Naturally, the home would come with a Tesla EV charger, a Tesla solar roof (conventional solar PV panels or solar tiles), a Tesla energy storage system, and maybe even a Tesla heat pump or Tesla home energy management system. They’d probably also all come with Starlink systems for internet. Again, there’s a quarter of country that apparently wouldn’t step foot in that community, but that doesn’t matter to a seller — all that matters is that you find a large number of likely buyers, and it seems that’s present.

“Beyond living in a Tesla Home, over 15% of Gen Z viewed it as an investment opportunity. This interest shows the potential for Tesla Homes to attract younger buyers eager to embrace cutting-edge technology and environmentally friendly housing solutions.” It’s an interesting point. So much of the Tesla story is now an investment story. So much of the Tesla fan community (seemingly almost all of it) is TSLA investors who are more focused on the stock price than anything else. It’s natural that all of these Tesla investors would see a Tesla home as a potential investment.

Of course, Tesla (i.e., Elon Musk) has shown no interest in developing Tesla communities, and I don’t think anyone else would have the right to do so — at least, not prominently utilizing the branding. Nonetheless, it’s interesting that JW Surety Bonds surveyed this, and the results are pretty fascinating. Passionate Tesla fandom is still enormous. Forgetting hypothetical homes for a moment, this implies that there’s still an enormous amount of demand for Tesla vehicles in the US.
