All the hype about EV sales not growing, or not growing fast — total rubbish, if you’re Kia. Sure, Tesla had its first decline in sales since the Tesla Model S was released, but several other automakers have done superbly. In the US, we now know that Kia saw a 74% year-over-year increase in EV sales in 2024! In fact, that was one of Kia’s three big highlights for the year as a whole.
“In 2024, six Kia models set all-time annual sales records: EV9 (+1,869-percent); Sportage (+15%); Carnival (+14-percent); Forte/K4 (+13-percent); EV6 (+6-percent); and Telluride (+4-percent),” Kia adds. Two of those models are electric ones (though, obviously, the EV9 is quite new).
Kia added that electric vehicles accounted for 7% of the company’s total US sales in 2024, which is also what our recent analysis at CleanTechnica showed through the 3rd quarter.
“Kia has solidified its leadership position within the EV market thanks, in part, to the successful launch of our flagship EV9 SUV and the introduction of Carnival hybrid powertrain, actively responding to the evolving demands of the market,” Seungkyu (Sean) Yoon, president and CEO of Kia North America and Kia America, said. (We’ll ignore that bit about the Carnival for now….) “Kia will leverage our consumer-centric, world-class product offerings and maintain this upward, positive momentum.”
In December, 1,951 units of the Kia EV9 were sold, up from 1,113 in December 2023. Across the full year, 22,017 units of the EV9 were sold, up from 1,118 in 2023. (As I noted above, the model is quite new.)
2,111 units of the Kia EV6 were sold in December, up from 1,249 in December of the year before. Across the full year, 21,715 units were sold in the US, up from 18,879 in 2023.
What I’m very eager to see is what happens when the Kia EV3 comes to town!
So, good news from Kia on EVs. Who’s next?
