After reporting on XPENG and NIO sales this past week, I was interested in diving in a little deeper and comparing the two
“smart EV” automakers. The companies are similar in age and have seen similar growth trends for years, so I always find it fun and interesting to create combined charts of these automakers and see what’s similar or different. Let’s jump in.

Just looking at November sales (for 2024 versus 2023 and 2022), I have to admit I was surprised and struck by how steep XPENG’s sales grew from November 2022 to November 2023 to November 2024. That’s some seriously rapid growth. In contrast, I was also surprised NIO’s year-over-year-over-year growth for November wasn’t stronger. Maybe my perception is warped by just how much XPENG’s sales grew, but I do think I expected more from NIO independently.

Now it gets even more interesting. Looking at sales from January–November for 2022, 2023, and 2024, the story goes in the other direction. NIO had slightly fewer sales than XPENG in the first 11 months of 2022, but then it grew much more so in 2023 and again grew much more so in 2024. That shows how single-month comparisons can be deceiving.

Of course, both automakers are seeing tremendous growth.

XPENG grew from 109,465 sales in the first 11 months of 2022 to 153,373 sales in the first 11 months of 2024. That’s solid growth. NIO just did considerably better by growing from 106,671 sales to 190,832 sales.

Looking only at the month of November, XPENG grew from 5,811 sales in 2022 to 30,895 in 2024. That’s stunning growth. XPENG’s November sales more than quintupled in those two years. NIO, meanwhile, grew from 14,178 sales in 2022 to 20,575 sales in 2024.

So, who has the better growth trend and can be expected to do better in 2025? It’s hard to say. Depending on the timeframe you use to examine the trends, either one of them could win or lose — or maybe the more appropriate thing to say would be “win big versus win little.” Let us know what you think about the two companies in the comments below.
