Tesla sales have dropped dramatically in Europe at the beginning of this year (compared to the beginning of last year). As José Pontes reported yesterday, they were down 45% year over year. It was the lowest monthly total for Tesla in Europe since January 2023. As a result, in the EV sales brand competition, Tesla was ranked 26th across Europe.

There are various potential reasons for Tesla’s slow start to the year. The least problematic reason for Tesla would probably be customers waiting for the new Tesla Model Y, and thus simply delaying sales until that arrives. Other possibilities include:

  • People are very upset over Elon Musk’s politics, lobbying for far-right parties in Europe, aligning with the Trump administration in the US, and even apparently doing a double Nazi salute during Trump’s inauguration (something that would actually align with some of Musk’s family history). We have seen many reports of longtime Tesla fans and owners saying they won’t buy a/another Tesla because of these things.
  • Tesla’s product lineup has gotten too stale, and there aren’t enough new options to choose from.
  • The competition has gotten much better. Many, many more electric vehicles have been rolled out in Europe in the past year from other auto brands, and they keep getting better and better. It could just be that the growing consumer choice across the continent is leading to more buyers finding something they like more elsewhere.
  • All of the above.

We will have to wait to see what happens with Tesla sales in Europe, and reasons for the trends, but in the meantime, we surveyed CleanTechnica readers to find out what you expect from Tesla in 2025 in Europe. Here’s what we found:

The result from hundreds of responses is that:

  • 49% of you think Tesla will sell fewer than 200,000 cars in Europe in 2025,
  • 22% think Tesla will sell 200,001–250,000
  • 14% think Tesla will sell 250,001–300,000
  • 9% think Tesla will sell 300,001–350,000
  • 3% think Tesla will sell 350,001–400,000
  • Less than 1% think Tesla will sell 400,001–450,000
  • 3% think Tesla will sell more than 450,000 cars

Note that Tesla sold about 325,000 units of the Model Y plus Model 3 in Europe in 2024.

We will see what happens in Europe in the remainder of the year and report back.
