From the Hyundai IONIQ 5 now being built in the US, to the CEO of Volvo Cars saying the best car he’s ever driven is an EV, to Chinese ride-hailing platform Didi bringing 200,000 electric cars to Mexico, we’ve got a lot of fun EV stories to highlight in this new roundup!
Electric Vehicles
“The fully electric Volvo EX90 is ready and on the road: the first batch of our flagship SUV is being shipped to our retailers in the United States and Europe right now, and the first customers will get their cars before the end of this month. We will ramp up deliveries, including to more markets between the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2025.
“The EX90 is Volvo Cars’ new flagship and sets new standards for our company in safety, sustainability and human-centric technology that makes people’s lives easier and more enjoyable.
“So when we tested our new flagship, we placed high demands on it and pushed it to its limits. Our chief executive Jim Rowan has put the EX90 through its paces for the last few weeks. Together with colleagues, he’s taken the EX90 on a road trip across the United States — from our plant outside of Charleston in South Carolina to California.”
“‘Based on this trip, I can confidently say that the EX90 is the best car we have ever made,’ says Jim Rowan. ‘After driving it for 950 kilometres through three states in the US in various driving conditions and road surfaces, I only have positive memories. The charging, the handling, the ride comfort, the silence of the cabin and the epic sound system, the reliability, the tech and the feel of the UI — I’ve never driven a Volvo car like it. The EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars, and it begins now.’”
Didi plans to bring 100,000 electric cars to Mexico
“The Chinese platform Didi plans to bring 100,000 electric cars to Mexico between 2024 and 2030. The company’s goal is to offer its app-based transportation service through this type of vehicle.
“According to Andrés Panamá, general director for Latin America, Africa and the Middle East at DiDi, this decision is due to what the company has observed in China, where 57% of the mileage traveled by its drivers is electrified.
“The boost to the electrification of the vehicle fleet in China is due to the Chinese government’s investment in these technologies, to the dynamics of the automotive industry in that market, but above all to the profitability offered by this type of vehicle.”
Hyundai debuts U.S.–built 2025 IONIQ 5 range, including new adventure-ready XRT
“Models produced at HMGMA are expected to be eligible for a $3,750 U.S. tax credit at start of sale. In the future, Hyundai anticipates the U.S.-built 2025 IONIQ 5 models to qualify for additional federal tax incentives. Leases continue to qualify for the $7,500 credit that Hyundai fully passes onto consumers with more attractive lease offers.”
“Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) announced that it will participate for the first time in the World Smart City Expo 2024 (WSCE). The expo [is being held] from September 3–5 at KINTEX in Korea, showcasing human-centered smart city solutions.
“WSCE is a global expo where the latest technologies, policies and solutions for smart cities are shared and discussed. It has been held eight times since its inception in 2017 under the sponsorship of the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Science and ICT.
“Last year, a total of 320 companies from 70 countries participated, introducing various solutions for future cities, such as smart infrastructure and energy efficiency. This year, various experiences and exhibitions will be held under the slogan ‘Better Life is Here.’”
Breakthrough: Volvo to launch electric truck with 600 km range
“Up to 600 km on one single charge. That’s how far Volvo’s next-generation heavy-duty electric truck will be able to drive. The longer range represents a break-through for long-distance transport with zero tailpipe emissions.
“Next year Volvo will launch a new long-range version of its FH Electric that will be able to reach up to 600 km on one charge. This will allow transport companies to operate electric trucks on interregional and long-distance routes and to drive a full working day without having to recharge. The new Volvo FH Electric will be released for sale during the second half of 2025.”

PowerUp: an e-charging network for Switzerland
“Swiss Post and the fenaco cooperative are planning the joint venture PowerUp. The two companies have signed the contracts to this effect. The goal of PowerUp is to offer a nationwide fast charging network for electric vehicles. The service will be available to customers at around 50 locations from mid-2025 and will then gradually be expanded to 300 locations. PowerUp uses Swiss electricity from renewable energy sources. It is a service for the whole of Switzerland and contributes towards the Confederation’s electromobility roadmap. The founding of the joint venture still has to be approved by the competition authorities.”
100% Swiss electricity from renewable energy sources
“The special feature of the PowerUp network is the close proximity of its fast charging stations to workplaces, shopping facilities or leisure activities. Combining the network with other services guarantees a secure and well-maintained charging infrastructure with contact people available on-site. PowerUp also has a simple pricing structure with no hidden costs. Users can pay with common payment methods such as TWINT and credit cards or with a customer card. Anyone who charges at PowerUp will purchase 100 percent renewable electricity from Switzerland.”
Volvo launches new service for charging of electric trucks
“Volvo Trucks continues to introduce new services for charging of electric trucks. The latest — Charging Management — is a service that allows for efficient charging at the home-depot.”
